These ranges often boasted better facilities than those operated by local municipal governments or volunteer organizations. In 1954, Waco passed an ordinance that banned handguns from being possessed or fired within city limits. This law represented another significant step in handgun control inWaco; until then, handguns had been allowed freely among private citizens without any regulation whatsoever. Eight people were killed in the shootout and twenty-one were injured. The incident is often seen as the deadliest shooting in Texas since the town was founded in 1859.

What is clear is that this tragedy had far-reaching consequences for America's cultural landscape and social fabric. In light of these lessons learned, it is important to assess what went wrong in Waco – why did such an Act of Terror occur? And how can we prevent similar tragedies from happening again? However, early on, the Davidians were met with violence and gunfire from law enforcement. In the end, 18 people were killed and over seventy-two were injured during the standoff. Ultimately, the Branch Davidian sect was found not guilty of all charges related to the siege and left town.
