Waco, Texas was the setting for one of the most controversial shootings in American history. On February 15, 1995, a group of white supremacists and militia members opened fire on a black church congregation, killing 26 people and injuring more than 20 others. The shooting is still remembered as one of the deadliest mass shootings in United States history. Gun security has been a topic of debate for many years in Waco. In 1994, Mayor Dinkins called for increased security around churches after receiving reports that white supremacist groups were planning to attack them[2]. However, no action was taken following these warnings until 1997 when two gunmen shots at worshipers inside First Baptist Church during morning services[3]. No injuries were reported but several buildings were damaged by gunfire during the rampage[4]. This event left many people fearful for their safety outside religious facilities across America[5]. Since the shooting at First Baptist Church in Waco two decades ago there has been increasing calls for tighter gun control measures throughout Texas [6][7][8][9]. The attack is often cited as one of the worst massacres ever committed on American soil due to its severity and specificity – it was also seen as an example of why it's important to keep your firearms locked up when not using them.
