Gun magazines have a long and rich history in Waco, TX. The first gun magazine was established in 1872 by Rifleman John E. Rankin at the behest of Sheriff James Bowie. The club met monthly to learn tactics and to practice shooting. In 1876, the Waco Gun Club organized its own militia regiment with thirty-six rifles and two shotguns. The club also began publishing a journal, "The Rifleman," which continued until 1903. In 1907, the Waco Gun Club purchased an old adobe building on Main Street for use as their clubhouse. They renamed it the Waco Armory and continued to operate from this location until it was destroyed by fire in 1951. The second gun magazine establishement took place in 1911 when Bob Youngs organized the Baylor Pistol Club at Baylor University. This pistol club became operational on November 3rd of that year and published their own journal called "Baylor Pistol." From 1911-1914, there were three other member organizations of the Baylor Pistol Club which included: Wichita Falls (1911), Garland ( 1912), and Denton ( 1913). These organizations conducted shoots at various locations throughout Texas including Lubbock, San Antonio, Austin, Fort Worth, Hearst Ranch near Clarendon Hills IL; etcetera. In 1916-1920 there was only one gun society affiliated with Baylor University - The rifle team from 1920-1924 led by Professor Ransom Morgan who later served as president of Texas A&M University rifle program from 1949-1963 inclusive. However during these years almost all pistols handgun matches were held outside of Baylor University campus or adjacent areas such as Wichita Falls High School where Driggs Stadium is located today due to lack of suitable facilities on campus at that time

The assailant fatally shot at least 26 people and wounded 24 others before being killed by police. The attack is the deadliest mass shooting in Texas history and suspected terrorist Adam Lanza's rampage in Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut earlier that year is also considered to be a factor in the spree.
