In the early morning of April 19, 1995, a group of Branch Davidians had gathered to commemorate the 10th anniversary of their religious sect's victory over federal agents in a siege that followed. TheDavidians were motivated by their belief that they were living in direct contact with God and that this would lead to an age of peace and prosperity. The FBI was investigating the Branch Davidians after reports emerged indicating that they were stockpiling weapons and planning to launch a suicidal assault on its agents. The standoff began at around 7:00 A.M., when FBI snipers opened fire on the unarmed Davidians. As time passed, more than 50 people died from gunfire or injuries sustained during the standoff, including half-brothers David Koresh and Waco leader Terry Nichols. At some point during the standoff, ATF agent Kenneth Wilburn became trapped inside one of the buildings with about 20 Branch Davidian gunmen. After several hours of negotiations and shooting, Wilburn was able to surrender and be taken into custody without incident. The remaining gunmen surrendered shortly afterwards - most likely because they realized they could not win against such overwhelming firepower.

Waco, Texas is an unincorporated community in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,500 at the 2000 census and grew to 6,000 by 2010. It is located near the Waco–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The current location of Waco was founded in 1874 as a small wagon stop on the Red River. A post office was established there in 1875 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. The community name may be derived from "wacom" or "wagon road." A post office called Nacogdoches was established in 1876 but closed operations in 1878. Waco took its name from George Washington Baylor who donated land for the town site and built a store and house there in 1879. This establishment became known as Baylor's Store (later renamed Baylor University). A school named Baylor College opened its doors on October 9, 1880 under the leadership of President James Smithson. In 1886, Waco awarded its first academic degree - an LLB - to John Dickey who had attended Baylor University School of Law. The college relocated to Austin soon after and remains one of Southwestern Texas' most highly respected institutions today with over 100 undergraduate programs and nearly 50 graduate programs offered through six faculties including law, business administration, health sciences/medical science/ Veterinary Medicine/Dentistry/ Veterinary Dentistry & Animal Science/Nursing which administered more than $160 million worth of scholarships during FY2015-16
