Hance quickly became well-known in the area and people came from all over looking for goods he could sell or trade with. Soon, there were several other traders operating in Waco and it quickly became one of the most important cities in Texas! This was definitely due in part to Hance’s hard work and determination!

In 1871, a group of Mormon settlers called theCowboys began their journey from Illinois to Texas. Their goal was to establish a new colony in what is now Waco, Texas. The Cowboys had no idea that they would become embroiled in an epic battle for control over this land that would last more than two years and cost them their lives. The events leading up to the shootout at Waco began on April 15, 1891, when three cowboys were shot by local militia members who were looking for outlaws responsible for the death of several people days earlier. The men who committed the murders were later hanged. The Cowboy war escalated when two other cowboys, Roy Batiste and Ned Raynor, decided to enter the fray. The three men clashed with local militias and eventually came into conflict with each other over control of a small ranch near Waco. In response to this violence, the Mexican government issued orders for its military forces to intervene. On May 26th, 1891, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna arrived in Waco with an army numbering around 3500 soldiers and ordered his troops into action against the Cowboy bandit force led by Batiste and Raynor. However, within minutes of engaging these insurgents, Mexican officers discovered that both sides were heavily armed and well-prepared for combat. As soon as it became clear that there was no hope of achieving any tactical success against such overwhelming odds, Santa Anna ordered his forces back home without further ado. A month later on July 8th (the day afterTexas Rangers fought off an attack by 10 Mexicans), only nine participants from both sides remain unaccounted for: five cowboys associated with Batiste’s gang dead including one gunman named Jack Ruby; four Mexicans killed; one Texan man wounded; three Anglo Texans - Edwin Barker Allen (alias "Dear Old Austin"), Clifford Berryhill (alias "Governor" Billy) and Johnnie Barlow - captured alive but still wearing their cowboy hats surrendered without fight or resistance; one militiaman killed accidentally while trying to disarm some hostages taken during previous skirmishes; one civilian bystander - George Hogg - died from natural causes while attending prayers at a Baptist Church just outside town limits
