The tragic story of Waco began in the early hours of April 23, 1993 when a group of religious zealots, led by David Koresh and his followers, stormed the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas. Koresh and his heavily armed followers refused to comply with local police requests to surrender, instead choosing to barricade themselves inside their compound until it came down on them. In what became known as "the siege," law enforcement negotiators attempted multiple times to talk to Koresh and persuade him to come out with his hostages. However, he adamantly refused any offers for negotiations until after he had killed at least six people inside the complex himself. Ultimately, despite heavy losses on both sides (including three officers killed), the standoff ended with a negotiated withdrawal from the compound by local authorities under cover of night.
