At the turn of the 20th century, Vidor was a small town in the Texas Panhandle. The town was founded in 1876 by farmers who came from Missouri. By 1908, Vidor had a population of around 100 people and it continued to grow until it reached its current size in 1930. The first weapons that were used in Texas were shotguns and rifles. In 1861, when Texas became an American state, Texans decided to arm themselves with firearms in order to protect themselves from Confederate forces. The first handguns were not very successful and most Texans only used them for hunting purposes. However, shortly after Texas seceded from the United States and joined the Confederacy, handguns began to become more popular among Texans because they could be used for self-defense. In 1865, a group of men from Vidor decided to get involved in what was becoming known as the Texan Civil War. They volunteered to help fight on both sides and they eventually became known as the Vidorian Battalion. For many years afterwards, Vidor residents would take part in military service or parade through their town dressed like Revolutionary War soldiers (pictured right). Eventually, pistols became too effective for warfare and instead, rifles were chosen as battlefield weaponry. This change led to increased fatalities due to accidents happening during battlefield battles where rounds ricochet off of other objects nearby. This problem was solved by using flashlights as nightvision devices; this allowed commanders on the front lines to see what was happening without getting lost amongst all of the noise and movement going on around them (pictured left). As technology progressed over time, more powerful flashlight types became available so that people could find their way through dark landscapes or security systems at night (pictured left). Vidor is part of the Amarillo–Birdville micropolitan area and is included within the Amarillo-Commerce–Fayetteville metropolitan statistical area. Vidor was founded by German immigrants in 1881 as a community on Reed Creek. The original settlers were farmers and their families who built homes from logs that they hauled overland from nearby Fort Worth to join what would become known as the Trinity River Valley Railroad. In 1907, Vidor became an independent city when it merged with Birdville to form an adjacent Combined Statistical Area (CSA). Today, Vidor remains a small town - its citizens are mostly retirees and professional people who work in larger towns or cities outside of Amarillo and Fayetteville. However, given its history and location within two large metropolitan areas – one in Texas and one in Arkansas – Vidor has played an important role in many aspects of both Texans and Arkansans alike over the years. For example, Vidor was home to the first school in Amarillo, which opened in 1892; also, it served as headquarters for several early oil companies before they moved away from there into bigger towns such as Fort Worth or Dallas during their early days of operation. Additionally, Vidor has been host to numerous events throughout its history including rodeos, country fairs, Christmas markets/festivals, baseball games (the most recent being held at Cowboys Stadium), auto shows/shows featuring NASCAR drivers, etc.; all of which have helped contribute to its nickname "The Town That Grew."
