The region that now includes Vidor had been settled by Texans since 1835 and its name came from José VIDOR, a Spanish explorer who stayed in the area during the early 1800s. The first post office was established in Vidor on January 1, 1845. In 1862, John GORDON opened an agricultural store in what is now downtown Vidor and soon became one of the leading merchant families in Texas. He also served as mayor of Vidor from 1865 to 1870 and as a delegate to the state Republican Convention of 1868. In 1907, Gustavus WILSON purchased 8 acres of land near downtown Vidor for $1,500. He began planning to build a large country house which would serve as his summer home and main offices for his business interests. When World War I broke out, Wilson decided to donate all his substantial profits from his wartime businesses to help finance Allied military efforts. After the war ended, he continueddxinghisbusinessinterestsinVidoruntilhis death in 1951. His widow donated most of her husband's estate (including several hundred acres of land) to create what is today known as Will Rogers State Park located adjacent to downtown Vidor
