In 1935, due to World War II shortages of food and fuel resources, Vidor enacted legislation establishing itself as an agricultural center with support from local farmers. A poultry plant and other related businesses were erected during this time period; however, these operations ceased after World War II because there was no market for chicken products outside Texas. In 1951, Vidor erected its own municipal building which still stands today as one of its most recognizable features. That same year saw the opening of IH-35W – then only a dirt road – which would later become one of America's leading highways and contribute significantly to business development within Vidor proper over ensuing years.
