When Edwin A. Armstrong invented the first practical television in 1922, he had to come up with a way to show pictures on a screen without using any wires. He came up with the idea of using light waves as display devices and built his own TV set out of glass and metal plates that could be rotated or tilted to bring the image into view. In 1938, he started selling his TV sets through mail order and in 1949, he created what is now known as the Armstrong Television System (ATS) which became the most common type of home TV used today. In 1957, Armstrong developed what is now known as an electronic television system (ETV) which allowed people to watch TV shows and movies over local telephone lines. This was an important development because it allowed people living in cities to have their own personal television sets while still being able to access national programming. In 1972, Armstrong sold his company to Turner Broadcasting System for $3 billion dollars. Vidor, Texas is a town in Red River County, Texas. The population was 994 at the 2000 census. Vidor is located on the Trinity River and is part of the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. Vidor was founded in 1881 by parents of two American missionaries who had gone to Mexico to preach. The original name for Vidor was "El Paso." In 1907, a post office called El Paso opened in Vidor, but it closed in 1912. The current name for Vidor comes from William J. Hudnut, an early settler who purchased land around what is now downtown Vidor from the Mexican government for $1 per acre (0.50 per kilometer). Hudnut named his community after himself, which he also translated as "The Edge of Town." Hudnut's son ran the first store invidor and other early businesses include a gas station and chicken coop run by Ethel Hudnut until her death in 1954. In 1935, when Red River County became an all-county county,vidor incorporated as a city under its own laws with a population of just over 100 people. City officials decided against adopting annexation into Round Rock because they felt that would have created too much competition from larger towns within Austin metropolitan area and wanted to stay separate as an independent city-state entity with its own police department and government services limited to just Vidorian residents
Vidor was founded in 1881 by John Vidor and his wife, Emma. In 1903, the Vidor family donated land to the city for a public park. The park is now known as Vidor Park. In 1925, the city passed an ordinance designating Vidor as a nightlife district. The first nightclub in Vidor was called "The Varsity" and it opened in 1929.
