By 1840, they had organized and named themselves "Nacogdoches", after Nacogdoche Creek which flows through their town site. The name stuck and by 1849 they had moved to what is now Elmendorf Road near present-day Slaton Elementary School/Middle School (now part of UTSA). From there they added land to their property at current day Lamar Boulevard/Principal Street before finally settling on some adjacent properties where they erected a log cabin in 1851 called "Ft Worth". In 1861 David Ayer bought some additional land adjacent to those owned by the Nacogdoches brothers so he could form an agricultural company with his brother John Ayer that raised corn and beans for local markets. The company prospered enough that John Ayer&David Ayer donated $10,000 towards building of Missionary Baptist Church (later First Baptist Church) which was completed in 1865 on Lower Green Street near today's Joe White High School). That same year David Ayer also donated another $10,000 towards construction of Houston Presbyterian Church (First Methodist Episcopal church), whichstands today across Main Street from Houston Community College (HCC). With this donation along with others made during early 20th century such as gifts to members schools districts like Humble Independent School District #1 & 2 totaling $145,000 within 4 years – all while living close to his farmstead – David Ayer helped build one of largest philanthropic endeavors in Texas history!
