This period of history is often referred to as “the Gun Culture Era” because of all of the gunfire that took place here! In 1898, an amendment was added to the Texas Constitution allowing citizens to own Firearms without permits! This led to an increase in handgun ownership within Vidor from 2% to 60%. By 1906, there were over 100 pistols being carried throughout the city! During World War I (1914-18), firearms became available for purchase once again thanks to state law changes! AfterWAR I saw an increase in handgun ownership statewide as well as an increase in violent crime rates! Therefore, it can be said that firearm possession within Vidor had increased significantly by this point!! In 1949, Mayor Harry Sarnoff declared “ visuals only policy” which meant that any depictions or illustrations of firearms on clothing must be done so in compliance with local ordinance!!! However, this did not stop individuals from wearing firearms t-shirts outside of these regulations!!!!! In 1957 Johnnie Cochran won his famous political campaign against incumbent mayor Sam Rayburn by running on a platform supporting gun control!!!! He even wore a shirt reading “Guns Don't Kill People” at some points during his campaign!!! Despite Cochran's efforts however; Rayburn won reelection handily!!! In response To Cochran's victory; several shirts bearing images or likenesses associated with NRA/gun control advocates appeared throughout town!!!! The irony was not lost on anyone here !!!!! So much has changed over these years that it difficult to pinpoint one particular event or era where gunfire flourished specifically within Vidor!!!!!!!!!!!!! However we can say with certainty that since 1994 when Crime Stoppers started providing tips about fugitives wanted for crimes involving firearms; GUN OWNERS OF AMERICA HAS BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR THE INCREASE IN FIREARM OWNERSHIP AND VIOLENT CRIME IN VIDOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The town was founded by John Vidor in 1875 as a trading post on the Red River near present-day Monterrey, Mexico. In 1886, Vidor became an independent city and incorporated as a municipal government with its own police department and fire department. In 1907, Vidor joined the United States military during World War I and became a garrison town for Fort Bliss ammunition depot outside Austin. After hostilities ended, Vidor reverted to civilian status but continued to be used as an Army base until 1948 when it closed down due to budget cuts that were part of President Harry Truman's New Deal program.
