The history of firearms in Vidor, Texas can be traced back to the early 1800s. The area that is now Vidor was once a Spanish land grant known as Rancho San Antonio de Padua. This rancho was granted to José Joaquín Margarita de la Peña y Pinto in 1827. During the Mexican-American War, La Peña and her husband fought for Mexico against the United States. When war ended, she received a large land parcel in what is now Vidor. She founded a small town on the property and named it after her brother-in-law, Don Francisco Margarita de Oñate. In 1881, Don Francisco Margarita donated another piece of land to the city of Vidor. The donation included two acres of parkland that became known as Park Row. In 1926, Mayor James Jarrell dedicated Park Row to firefighters who had lost their lives in the Great Depression. Today, Park Row remains an important part of Vidor’s skyline and features a variety of businesses and residences including City Hall and fire stations from when Vidor was founded up until today. Firearms played an integral role in many aspects of life in Vidor during its earliest years. For example, one early owner of Rancho San Antonio de Padua noted that “the rifle has been our most valuable acquisition since we arrived here” (Higgins). Firearms were also used for protection against Native Americans who posed a threat to settlers and businesses located near the Missions throughout much of this period (Flamm). As women began working outside the home beginning in the late 1800s, they needed something to protect them from attack by malevolent figures such as men with knives or bows (Moses).thus firearms became an essential part of daily life for women throughout much of Texas during this time period (Wilson). There are several stories about how guns came into use withinvidoran at this time period: one story says that a woman named Emma married John Teague while he still resided at rancho san antonio de padua; however she soon sought revenge upon him by shooting him three times with her revolver while he slept (Boydell); another story tells about Amedeo Fontana whose father gave him two pistols as gifts when Fontana turned eighteen; these pistols were later used by Fontana during his military career (Murphy); finally there is the story about Mathias Kapp who bought five handguns from General Sam Houston just before Houston's march on Austin (Wrightson). Allowing citizens armed selfdefense was considered vital at this point in American history due to fear of Indian attacks on frontier settlements(Flamm 9-10). As gun ownership increased withinvidoran over time, so too did safety concerns arise related to using firearms indoors or around children or animals which could be dangerous if not handled correctly(Flamm 11-12; Wrightson 13). One solution proposed at this time involved having local constables enforce laws regarding firearm ownership and use withinvidoran(Flamm 14-15): however this idea met strong resistance from some residents because they felt that government intrusion into their personal affairs was unconstitutional(Wilson 16) . Eventually bans on certain types or calibers OF firearms were put into place withinvidoran due to public outcry(Higgins 17) . These bans typically ranged between 6mm (.25 caliber)and 12 gauge (.50 caliber), although exceptions occurred sometimes where larger calibers were allowed as well(Flamm 18; Higgins 19) . Finally, after years of debate and discussion among officials including members from both state legislatures as well as representatives from various nonprofit organizations interested in improving public safety through firearm regulation(Higgins 20), handgun regulations passed into law by Governor Tom Vinson on November 3rd,.1968

The history of firearms in Vidor, Texas begins with the arrival of pioneers in the early 1800s. As ranching and farming became more important throughout the area, arms were needed to protect property and people from animals and other threats. handguns, shotguns, rifles and pistols began to be developed in Vidor. In 1872, Capt. John Hogg purchased land east of Vidor on what is now known as County Road 665. The following year he built a cabin on the site which served as the first permanent home in Vidor. In 1876 Capt. Hogg married Sarah Morrill and moved his family to their new home. That same year they started a small grocery store at 5th Street and University Avenue in Vidor which was soon joined by another store on State Highway 183 near Heidelberg Road. By 1886 there were four stores in town with a population of about 100 people. During World War I (1914-1918), 1st Lt.-Colvin Smedley (USMC) stationed at Fort Worth returned to Texas after being discharged from duty in Europe and arrived in Corpus Christi on December 12, 1914 aboard USS "Bismarck". Heading south along US 71 he passed through Dallas on January 10, 1915 when he stopped at the old Hudspeth post office where he met Captains John Amsden (HMS Bounty) and William Fenton (USS Monitor). On February 6 Captain Amsden entered into an agreement with Major Lyle French (USMC) for purchase of three ranches totaling 868 acres located east of Vidor between FM 2189N & FM 2536W for $5 per acre plus $2 per month rent until sold; this deal was later changed to an agreement for French to lease two ranches totaling 454 acres located east of Vidor between FM 2189N & FM 2536W for $10 per acre plus $2 per month rent until sold also pending title/land acquisition by French; this lease arrangement was later changed again to an agreement for French to purchase two ranches totaling 960 acres located west ofvidor adjacenttoFM 2722N & FM 2809W for $20 per acre including $4 per week rental until sold also pending title/land acquisition byFrench This purchase marked the beginning of cattle ranching activity within present day Vidor County . The first recorded sale took place on March 3rd 1916 when Wm Gorman bought 126 head of Longhorn beef from Ephraim Brown at "$3 each" By 1918 there were eleven businesses operating within town limits with a total population of 300 people; this number decreased during World War II as most businesses closed or converted into housing developments. However, one business did remain open during World War II - The Hudspeth Store which continued operation even after all other local businesses had closed due to wartime shortages . On September 15th 1944 Maj.-Gen . Charles Biddle surrendered control over much territory eastern than Corpus Christi Bayou northward extending upriver into Beeville County , Tex., including parts of Vidal , San Angelo , Weatherford , White Sands , Nueces City etc., thus ending American participation in World War II . This surrender created significant difficulties since possessions acquired pursuant thereto were subject not only to military law but also civilian law arising out thereof ; it was not until 1947 that these issues were resolved by Order No 01-3G issued by United States Army Commander-in-Chief Southwest Pacific Area Headquarters under General Dwight D Eisenhower
Vidor is a town in Texas, United States. With a population of just over 6,000 people, it is the smallest municipality in the state. Vidor was founded by settlers from what is now Oklahoma on November 17, 1870. The original town was named for Augustus Vidor, who had come to Texas in 1859 as part of the first wagon train led by General Sam Houston. The post office was established in 1872 and currently serves as the only community within Vidor Municipality. The name "Vidor" has been variously spelled "Widora", "Widora Heights", and "Widora Springs". It may be derived from a Creekside word meaning "safe haven."vidori-homes were built starting around 1900 to accommodate agriculture workers migrating to California during the gold Rush era. The first store opened here on October 15, 1890 - two years after Vidor itself became a town! The store's owner and first employee was Fenton Hardesty. From that point forward, Vidor's economy relied heavily on farming and ranching operations. A number of industries have also come and gone: leatherworking until 1940; brick manufacturing until 1975; paper manufacturing until 1984; processing services till present including printing and web design; however, most residents continue to rely largely upon agriculture for their income or rural tourism as an escape from city life
