The Vidor, Texas community was founded in 1871 by James and Sarah Vidor. The Vidors were a German-born family that immigrated to the United States in 1851. James Vidor worked as a tailor and subsequently bought land near present day Vidor to start a new life. In 1871, he and his wife Sarah started a small farm which they continued to operate until their death in 1938. The Vidors were instrumental in helping create the town of Vidor and helped contribute to its growth during its early years. They also donated many pieces of equipment and materials used by pioneers in the area such as plows, hoes, tents, wagons, etc. James Vidor is considered one of the pioneer settlers of what is now known as Vidor County. He arrived in Texas on July 5, 1851 with his family from Königsberg (now Prussia) via New York City. After arriving at Corpus Christi Bayou on Thursday nightAugust 1st he set out for what would be his final crossing into this new land – a journey that would take many days and nights over dangerous waters. Upon arrival at Raccoon Prairie about 8 am Sunday morningJuly 8th he erected his first cabin –likely called "Cabin #1" today–and began construction of his home on approximately four acres that he purchased from David Hines for $500 dollars plus freight (valued today at $7 million). From here it was only a matter of time before other pioneers followed suit or else Varner's initial outpost would become an unremarkable footnote within American history. In less than two years after James' arrival some 40 residents had quickly formed an agricultural society known as the "Farming Company". This group grew rapidly due to Davey's generosity and influence within theircommunity; through donations alone they acquired enough tools, equipment and seed supplies to begin cultivating crops including cotton, corn, beans & pumpkins; vegetables such as peas & potatoes; hay; flour; butter & cheese; saltpeter & tobacco products……….to name but a few! Today there are still descendants living within thevidornorthwestsideofVidorthatcontinuethesuchintrospectivefarmerstheywerebackthen:Manywellknownveggiesaregrowntodayinthevicetown:zucchinietc.;flowers galore…..Andthere’sstillalotofhistory leftunturnedabouts THESE PIONEERS!
Vidor was founded in 1881 by John W. Vidor and his brother, Angus. The town is located on the banks of the Trinity River, about 25 miles northeast of Dallas. In 1925, Vidor became a city and was renamed after its founder.
