The history of airguns in Vidor, Texas can be traced back to the early days of the state. In 1907, a man by the name of John Ritchie built an airgun range and Site in what is now known as The Gables. This range was used by local farmers and hunters for target practice. It was not until 1915 that handgun rights were granted to Texans, giving airguns their first real foothold in the state. In 1930, The Gables Air Gun Range was closed down and its equipment sold to another nearby business called The Rancho Safari Club. This club continued to use it until 1938 when they moved out of Vidor altogether. However, they did leave behind a lasting legacy; they donated all of their firearms stored at The Rancho Safari Club to the Texas State Historical Library for research purposes. From this donation, airguns began reaching a wider audience in Texas. In 1949, Colonel Harry Hogg organized the first annual meeting of the Texas Rifle Association (TRA) in Vidor, which would later become known as the NRA convention center (now part of UT Austin). At this event, he introduced new types of handguns intoTexas’s gun trade; these handguns would go on to become known as Colt revolvers! That same year saw also another important milestone in airgun history; The Gables Air Gun Range reopened under new management after being leased from TRA by Arnie Cunningham! Cunningham ran it successfully for six years before selling it to a group of individuals who renamed it The Pistolero Shooting Center! Vidor, Texas is a small town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,634 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Vidor were Spanish travelers who passed through in 1821 on their way from New Spain to San Antonio. In 1836, General Sam Houston founded the Republic of Texas and named it for him. The original town site was within present-day Vidor's boundaries but was moved about two miles eastward in 1837 when a swampy piece of land became available near what is now I-35W. The name "Vidor" came from Spanish Villa de Ivoria which stood on the bluff overlooking the then Townsite (present day Vidor). By 1880 there were only 10 residents in the tiny community of just over 100 people located along Loop 410 west of US 183 and US 87; however, by 1900 there were 375 people living in Vidor with an average daily population growth rate of 11%. In 1951 local officials decided that an all-purpose school would be better than a one-room schoolhouse and built a new schoolhouse on Main Street. This building has been used as a church since its construction and still serves as that community's primary education facility today. In 1957, another all purpose school was built south of this old building on Highways 183 & 287 and served as both the municipal center for Vidor until 1959 when that function transferred to current Site 5th Grade School #1 located off FM 620 outside Ofallon (below). A new high school was erected north/west of this former elementary/middle/junior high building in 1998 after years of planning and fundraising by parents–the first dedicated comprehensive pre-kindergarten through 12th grade public schools serving VIDOR! Of particular note are: 1) Lighthouse Park – home to one or more large open water cannons dating back to 1902 when Humble Oil Company employees supervised their installation during Corpus Christi Naval Yard maneuvers; 2) Old Timer's Museum - contains artifacts dating back to 1860 related to cattle drives across America; 3) Michael & Kathy White Memorial Library - features many interesting periodicals including local editions of "National Geographic", "Texas Monthly", "Houston Chronicle" and "USA Today"; 4)Old / West Horse corral - offers excellent viewsof downtown Austin skyline from its roof top location; 5) New Beginnings Baptist Church (originally First Presbyterian Church), also known as Gullah Community Chapel which offers numerous educational opportunities for children including bible classes 9am till noon Tuesdays & Thursdays morning leading up to Sunday services; 6) Richardsville Cemetery – home to many notable citizens such as Mrs. Smith who donated land for Pierson Elementary School in 1922; 7) Overlook Cemetery – contains several military graves dating back to World War II including those of six Texans killed at Anaconda Ridge Massacre south side OFALLON Rd., Mapleton UT 8 pm Fri Jun 25 1915 - solomon rogers

However, economic decline has recently struck Vidor hard; recent years have seen job losses at several local businesses and a corresponding decrease in tax revenue. Nevertheless, despite these challenges, Vidor remains an important cultural and heritage center for its region.
