In 1840, Captain Fessenden explored this area and reported back that there were several good buildings and some cultivation but no water or soil could be developed because of high hillsides between promising local sites and upstream reservoirs necessary for irrigation systems for other portions of East Texas." Victoria, Texas is a small city located in Williamson County, Texas. It was founded on April 15, 1847 by John P. Gaines and his wife Maria Ramirez. The current mayor of Victoria is Ruben Gomez with the term ending in 2019. Victoria was originally named Gainesville after the original owner of the land who moved there from Georgia in 1837. On February 14, 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell's army destroyed the town's courthouse and buildings before retreating from Virginia. Gainesville resumed operation as a post office on March 3rd under new name of Victoria due to its proximity to Richmond. In 1865, Victoria had a population of just over 100 people but by 1870 it had grown to 2200 residents and by 1880 it reached 4500 residents. By 1893 the population had topped 10,000 people for the first time and by 1907 it had surpassed 20,000 people making Victoria one of the most populous cities in Texas at that time. The city experienced several hard times during its early years including being burned down twice (1868-1870) and having to fight off numerous lawsuits brought against it because of its high rate of crime (1893-1907). However, through all these struggles Victoria emerged as an important cultural center for Williamson County and eventually became one of the largest cotton towns in America due to its production capabilities associated with its large plantations. In 1916–1920Victoria lost much of its manufacturing capability when two major mines closed however Victoria regained some industry when it opened an aluminum plant in 1957 which supplied aluminum products nationwide until 1984 when that plant shut down due to economic problems faced by other American companies operating within that market at that time.
