Victoria, Texas is a small town located in the west central part of Texas. The town was founded in 1879 by Nicholas Davenport and his family. The population of Victoria reached 2,500 people in 1900 and 5,000 people by 1910. The post office was established in 1880 and the first store opened in 1881. In 1898, Victoria became a city and it had a population of 30,000 people by 1920. In 1955, Victoria merged with nearby Midland to form the new city of Midland-Victoria. Victoria has experienced many changes over time but its economy has remained largely unchanged since its incorporation into the City of Midland. Families from Victoria immigrated to Texas during the early 1800s when it was known as Mexican territory. Many families worked on ranching or farming for their owners back East. When California gained statehood in 1850, Mexicans began streaming into Texas looking for opportunities and eventually found their way to Victoria which at that time consisted only of Fort Davis and a few scattered homes around what is now downtown Midland. By 1870, there were 3 stores open in Victoria with 100 residents; all three businesses closed within 10 years due to economic reasons including increased competition from other towns east of Austin (including Midland) plus disease brought over by travelers from Mexico who were seeking land grants west of the US border hoping to build railroads connecting Mexico with points northward. The first permanent settler arrived in 1879 when Nicholas Davenport came down from Missouri River via wagon train after securing an Indian treaty trading rights near present day Waco (now Dallas). Mr. Davenport’s nephew George Hargrave also landed hereabouts on July 25th following a long journey across country on horseback covered almost 40 miles arriving at Fort Davis just before sundown on July 26th 1840 having advanced 5 days travel time without food or water! This event helped spur development along these banks as well as potential business ventures such as cattle drives bringing salt beef back East past Democrat Springs where it was then cooked over an open fire until all usable nutrients had been consumed! Interestingly enough not one house nor any sign remains today evident anywhere within blocks radius surrounding fort DAVIS save one old abandoned farmstead dating back to at least 1886 still standing vacant although surrounded by industry & housing developments!
