Gun targets have a long and varied history in Victoria, Texas. The earliest known target date back to 1892 when a Mr. W.J. Kline set up a shooting contest at the old cotton gin on the present-day campus of Sam Houston State University. The first rifle match held in Victoria was on November 3, 1895, with twenty rifles and shotguns engaging in shoot-outs for prizes of fifty cents each. In 1899, the first pistol match was organized by Captain Bigham and Dr. Hamer with thirty rounds fired at ten feet from a sandbag mannequin representing an adobe wall. From 1906 to 1912, Tullock’s Archery Store sponsored “Three Day Rifle Championship” where teams of five competitors took part in three matches staged over three days; one event being a fast shot competition using only English shooters (rifle teams) while others used pistols only (pistol teams). On October 4th, 1907 Captains Fenton and Perkins organized “Texas Open Pistol Shooters Association” which allowed men eighteen years of age or older to compete using any type of pistol including revolvers; this organization lasted until 1911 when it merged into the American Pistol Association (finalized as the American Rifle Association). In 1934 Royal Canadian Mounted Police participated in an exhibitionmatch at Bobcat Hills Ranch Range near Austin with ninety men firing Model 1903 Springfield rifles at sixty yards; preliminary scores were posted for both sides before playoffs ensued which ended with the final standings being determined by total points received from each round played. On July 5th 1916 two hundred fifty people gathered at Lone Star Park south of Victoria to watch World War I veterans fire blank cartridges off logs while enjoying refreshments provided by General Mills Company; prior to this event there had been no formal matches involving military personnel withinVictoria since 1881 when Captain John Richardson established an artillery detachment under his command along Slaughter Creek Rd.; however during World War I sniper platoons operating out of local barracks captured enemy soldiers surrounding our Field Artillery Barracks who were then summarily executed without benefit of trial or counsel; muzzleloading muskets became available after 1915 so this episode has officially come to be considered as one of Victoria’s most infamous gunfights! In 1931 Major J L Woolridge organized “Texas Gun & Pistol Tournament” which comprised ten events contested over two weeks featuring various firearms including airguns, pistols and shotguns; overall winner was determined by point standingsat end of tournament plus shoot out trophies awarded for first place through fourth place respectively In 1938/39 Colonel S R Haney xxx organised “Texas Open Air Rifle Championship” contested over distances up to seventy yards using Remington 870Rs equipped with Winchester autoloading gunsights Prior to this event airgun competitions had been restricted to those utilizing .22 calibre rimfire arms only although handguns could still be entered utilizing nine shot rifled bullets manufactured by Butler Ammunition Company Ltd.; however due to heavy rainfall on June 20th 1939 some fields were too swollen from earlier that season making entry difficult so participants convened outside for lunch before reassembling inside for competition beginning at 2:00pm That day saw twelve different firearm types utilized including six revolver shoots involving eight individuals each followed by four shotgun contests comprising twelve rounds each fired from fifteen feet away utilising either Holland Guns Orris Shotguns or Webley & Scott Coronados models complete with flash hiders For all these events contestants wore black face masks made from felt trimmed down around mouth leaving little opportunity for sniping! These days matches are typically attended by several hundred spectators who are often encouraged notto use secondary weapons such as umbrellas or overhead shots knowing full well that snipers will have clear fieldofview once their victim is situated approximately 6 foot behind the target fence!

In Victoria, Texas, on April 14, 1858, a group of Texans met to discuss the possibility of forming a state called Texas. The meeting was held at the home of General Sam Houston and the topics of discussion included rifles and pistols. The Texans agreed to form a provisional government with Austin as its capital. In May 1858, the provisional government organized elections for governor and legislature. John Garner won election as governor while James Polk was elected to the legislature. On July 2,1858, Texas became an independent republic with Austin as its capital
