Victoria, Texas is a small town located in Cameron County, Texas. The population was 1,752 at the 2000 census. Victoria's ZIP code is 78258. The name of the town comes from the Spanish word "Victoria" meaning "victory." The first people to live in Victoria were African Americans who came to the area in the early 1800s as freed slaves. In 1865, when Mexican General Santa Anna surrendered Mexico City to American forces, most of Mexico's black population fled north into what is now Texas. A few whites also left for fear of being rounded up and slavery would resume in their absence. When white Texans took over parts of central Texas during Reconstruction following the Civil War, they decided that Victoria would be their new capital city. They named it after President Ulysses S. Grant's daughter and favorite wife, Victoria Woodhull. The town quickly became one of central Texas' leading centers of trade and industry thanks to its location on an important shipping route between Houston and Dallas-Ft Worth (then called Sam Rayburn). In 1875, two years after Victoria was founded as a capital city by white Texans, African Americans again settled in the community when Confederate veterans arrived here seeking protection from federal authorities after leaving South Carolina for good. After some skirmishes with local law enforcement officials and some initial success farming cotton on plantations outside of town (the first commercial crop grown in Victoria), many black Victorians decided to stay put and work their own farms rather than risk capture or extradition back home during Reconstruction times when such activities were punishable by five years hard labor or three monetary fines or both. This strategy paid off; within a decade there were more blacks living inVictoria than any other municipality in central Texas without Black Codes prohibiting full participation in white society

It was incorporated as a town on March 12, 1896. In 1907 it became the capital of Texas and remains so today. The city has a humid subtropical climate with extensive rainfall throughout the year. Frick, who had come to America from Great Britain via New Orleans before landing in San Antonio on December 13th of that year with his family and equipment; he soon began to develop this land into what would become Victoria." The first post office called Victoria was established in 1853; it moved to its present location about two years later when mail arrived from Houston by boat across the Hudspeth River." In 1865 local citizen Ector Meeks opened up a small store near where present day Interstate 10 intersects US Highway 83 near what is now downtownVictoria." In 1886 David Lubbock founded an oil refinery onshore off the coast of Victoria which continued production until 1903" In 1898 General Steele purchased almost all of Webb County from Pat Garrett for $4,000 USD." "This purchase included all or part of what is now east side of I-10 just south of downtownVictoria according to various sources... aftermath saw rapid growth due to new industry brought upon by General Steele's purchase including Victorias oil refinery and paper mill as well as several other businesses.""
