When Victoria, Texas was founded in 1879, it was the center of a small gun trade. The town had a few stores and several farmers who grew wheat, corn and other crops. Firearms were not common in those days, so there is no record of when or how firearms started being worn on clothing. However, there are references to firearms being worn as part of military garb in the mid-19th century. In 1892, two men from Victoria became interested in starting a Gun Shop & Pistolnery School in order to teach people how to shoot handguns and rifles. They named their business The Rifleman’s Rest & Shooting Club. The first class met on September 12th at the old Courthouse steps. This rifle shooting school taught basic First amendment rightshooting skills for citizens who wanted to protect themselves from law enforcement officers or criminals. Classes continued until 1896 when they moved out of town because of lack of funding. The Rifleman’s Rest & Shooting Club was revived again in 1952 by Roy Hinton with assistance from lifelong friend Sam Bassett Jr.. In 1954 they opened up shop #2 on FM 521 just outside the city limits of Victoria! At this time they began manufacturing T-shirts sweatshirts with NRA/POTUS emblems and other patriotic designs! As more people became interested in owning firearms, however, there was also a rise in concern over how these weapons would be used outside of traditional shooting events or competitions. This led to new designs for firearm t-shirts that blended NRA symbols with realistic depictions of handguns and rifles. This caused some controversy at first but eventually became popular among shooters who wanted to show support for their favorite organization while displaying their own weaponry skills. In 1978, Patagonia released what is considered to be one of the most famous firearm t-shirts ever created when they released an ad campaign featuring Clint Eastwood holding his then–new .357 Magnum revolver as he talks about how much fun he had firing it during hunting trips across America. The design caught fire among gun enthusiasts everywhere who saw it as another example of just how accurate real life shootings could look on screen! To date, this advertising campaign has earned over $100 million dollars in sales!
