Each man had a Lewis Gunstock Rifle which they used to shoot at passing cars and members of the local militia who were trying to stop them. There was no evidence that any law enforcement officials were involved in this crime other than providing cover for the gunmen while they killed innocent civilians. This tragedy has been called one of the deadliest mass shootings in American history.

However, during World War II the town experienced rapid growth due to massive military Camp David (later Fort Hood) nearby and its proximity to both U.S. Army Air Forces bases and combat zones around the world. In 1958, Victoria also became home to Texas A&M University’s School of Business Administration; however, this school closed in 2009 after 38 years of operation. Today, few remaining buildings from those days remain within Victoria limits: only one building still stands on Main Street (nowLoop 336), while most other structures have been replaced or demolished over time. Victoria has long been a center for agriculture; today it is home to one of the largest agricultural production districts in Texas with over 100 farm businesses and 5 million pounds of beef production each year
