Bullets were first used in Texas in 1868. In that year, Eddy C. Barnes, a rifleman with the Texas Cavalry, shot and killed an Indian on Big Cypress Prairie. The Indian was so angered by this act of violence that he attacked Barnes and his horse. Barnes quickly dispatched the Indian with a single shot from his carbine. From then on, bullets became standard weaponry for Texan cavalrymen. The use of bullets as artillery projectiles began in America in the early 1800s. However, it wasn’t until 1868 that bullets were introduced into Victoria, Texas as cannon ammunition to provide fire support for American troops fighting against Native Americans. When cannons started being replaced by rifles as battlefield armaments,bullets became an important part of military history in Victoria because they could be fired at high altitudes without issue and they could travel great distances before detonating prematurely. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered the construction of Fort Worth’s first battery of 12-pounder cannons to protect the city from Confederate attacks during the Battle of Fort Worth (1865). These guns were not able to fire projectiles larger than 2 inches wide due to their small caliber but they did fire shells up to 50 feet long which caused significant damage to Confederate positions.
