In the 1800s, Vernon was a small town in Comanche County, Texas. It had a population of about 350 people. The first white settlers in Vernon were Wm. H. and Abby English, who came in 1836. In 1840, James Gillett settled in Vernon and became the first postmaster there. In 1849, John Bigham settled in Vernon and operated a store There. About 1870, the old San Antonio-El Paso Railroad arrived in Vernon and changed the landscape of the town by moving several farms to new sites north of town. The railroad left behind a depot and several yards east of Main Street which served as the heart of the community until it was destroyed by fires in 1917.
