Vernon, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas and it was founded in 1881. The population of Vernon at the 2010 census was 1,993. Vernon has two schools- Vernon High School and Vernon Elementary School. It also has a post office, which opened in 1907. The first settler in Vernon was James A. Crabbe, who arrived there in 1881. He named his land "Vernon" after himself and his son, Vernal H. Crabbe. In 1902, the townsite of Vernon was annexed by Hudspeth County and became part of its settlement area; however, the name remains unchanged to this day. In 1916, the Texas Legislature created Hudspeth County as an all-county political entity with headquarters located in nearby San Antonio; however, the Venerable James A. Crabbe never received permission from then-Hudspeth County Judge John Pemberton to establish a school on his land near present day White Settlement Road and Bowie Street because he felt that such an establishment would compete with existing educational institutions within his own county seat (San Antonio). As a result of this conflict between crabbe's wishes for education within HISD boundaries versus Pemberton's desires for centralized government control over local affairs within Hudspeth County - continuing until today - only one high school currently operates within Vernon: Vernon High School (established 1909). Vernon was founded by pioneers in 1887 as a small community named Vernon Station after General James K. Polk, who served as President of the United States that year and had opened up new territory to settlement in what is now Texas. The name change came about because a man from Vernon died while trying to cross an open prairie on horseback into Round Rock County for provisions during his war years with Mexico. In 1892, local ranchers started farming land around what are now Vernon Center and Slaughter Grass Roads; this led to other areas joining Vernon over time including Slaughter Grass Road itself which became known as Main Street in 1907 when it joined with Streetsboro Boulevard to form East Main Street/Vernon Avenue (later West Stockton Boulevard). In 1958, Vernon Bravo (a local cattle rancher) donated land east of Slaughter Grass Roads for use as a shopping center; this helped spur further development around it over time including multiple office parks and residential neighborhoods developments since then such as West Oaks Village and River Oaks Estates neighborhood just east of main street today before intersecting Slaughter Grass Road near Interstate 35E for access into downtown Austin proper (now called South Lamar). Today, much of what once made up Vernon has been replaced by high-rise buildings or apartment complexes located within walking distance or close by public transportation options such as buses or trains running down Main Street between river Oaks Gardens apartments and Parkway Central mall across I-35E from downtown Austin proper - making it easy for residents to get where they need to go without having too much effort expended getting there either through carpooling or public transportation options like buses or trains instead of driving themselves. As mentioned earlier, Vernon was founded by pioneers during one of history's earliest times when Texans were still opening up new territory to settle - meaning that even though much has changed since then regarding its demographics, culture and economy (involving various waves of migration over time), some things have not: its location remains unchanged on the Edwards Plateau just south of downtown Austin proper - making it convenient for residents everywhere who need only minutes' walk away from all their needs either through streetsboro avenue or main street itself
The name Vernon is derived from the French word "verni" meaning to color or dye. The first white settler in Vernon was James Covington, who arrived in 1836.
