Vernon, Texas is a small town located in Vernon County, Texas. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. Vernon is home to the Vernon High School and the Vernon Municipal Airport. Vernon has a small grocery store, three churches (Anglican, Methodist, Baptist), one post office (founded 1884), two schools (Vernon High School and Vernon Municipal Airport), and one business (Richardson Plumbing). The first settlers in Vernon were Mr. James Richardson and his family who arrived in 1881. They planted acres of land around what is now the municipal airport and developed it into a farming community with homes, businesses, schools, and an airport. In 1934 Mexican American labor immigrants founded the Sanchez-Fernando Hardware Store which remains open today as one of Vernon's few commerical businesses still running unchanged since its original creation. In 1951 Vernons original school was built on property donated by Mrs. Nellie Meeksstrom after her husband died in service during World War II. It served the community until 1978 when it was replaced by a new school building which still serves as Vernons primary school today. The present day church structure was erected in 1912 by Pastor A C Greenough Havens following his sermon on this site that night which had an enormous impact on local residents due to its unusual features such as an all-wooden platform without rails or posts that allowed for true standing ovations while preaching from the pulpit rather than through a megaphone like most churches at that time. The Vernon, Texas area was first settled by Paleo-Indians in the late Pleistocene era. The area now known as Vernon was part of the Wichita Nation. In 1857, a group of Anglo-American settlers founded the town of Vernon on Bandera Creek in present-day Vernon County. From its establishment until the mid 1800s, Vernon developed as a small farming community with few industry or commercial activities. In 1872, after years of efforts by settlers and politicians, the new Austin–San Antonio Railway was built through the area and soon made Vernon an important transportation center. With increased commerce and population growth, Vernon experienced rapid development during this time. By 1900, it had become one of the largest towns in Texas and boasted a population of over 10,000 people. During World War I (1914-18), much effort was expended to help improve military airfields in surrounding areas so that Texan planes could be used against German forces on overseas battlefields. One such airfield was located at Vernon and became known as “Vernon Field” due to its proximity to that town. During World War II (1939-45), Vernon also played an important role in helping form United States Air Forces operations in Europe (USAAF) during both world wars. Following World War II, Vernon experienced rapid economic decline due to increasing competition from neighboring cities and rural communities throughout Texas. However, some forward-thinking entrepreneurs began creating new businesses within the community while others revived older ones; ultimately helping to maintain some level of local economic vitality into the 21st century. Despite these setbacks, however, Vernon has always been an active participant inTexans’ history and culture – something which is most evident today when visitors experience everything from historical sites to cultural events celebrating native cultures around town.
