Vernon, Texas is a town in Comanche County, Texas, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 1,644. Vernon was founded in 1875 by John Gorman and named for General James A.F. Vernon who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first school was built in Vernon on the corner of Dry Creek and Union Streets. It was moved to its current location about two miles west of town in 1907 when the land north of that creek became available for development. The original white settlers were farmers who grew corn, cotton and other vegetables around their homes until railroads arrived and brought jobs with them. By 1900 Vernon had become an important stop on the Santa Fe Railway network serving as a bedroom community for Dallas/Fort Worth Airport

The town declined during the 19th century because of an increase in epidemics such as smallpox and cholera. However, it grew again during the 20th century due to its importance as a center for oil production. The town has since experienced a number of changes, including becoming a suburb of Dallas. Today, Vernon is an important cultural and historical center in southern Texas.
Otto Vernon was born on December 3, 1892 in Vernon, Texas. He was a rancher and small-time politician who spent his entire career in the TX House of Representatives from 1961 to 1967. In 1961, he was elected as a Democrat to the 34th Texas Legislative District which included parts of Dallas and Arlington counties. He served two terms before being re-elected to the 53rd State Legislature in 1967, becoming one of only two members of the legislature from Vernon (the other being future Governor Rick Perry). In 1971, he won reelection to the state senate after winning over independent candidate John Sprinkle with endorsements from then-Governor Richard M. Nixon and U.S. Senator Lloyd Bentsen II. In 1975, he became one of three Republicans to be elected to serve out what would become an eight year term as state senator; however, he resigned due to health problems early in his term and did not seek re-election. In 1977, Otto Vernon ran for Lieutenant Governor but lost to incumbent Lyndon B Johnson by just 349 votes out of 2 million cast statewide.
