But that didn’t stop Vernon from becoming a center for firearm manufacturing. In fact, many of today’s firearms manufacturers were founded in Vernon during this time period. One of the most prominent firearms makers in Vernon was James Ewell who was responsible for developing and manufacturing some of Texas’ most common weapons such as shotguns and handguns. His company also played a significant role in helping maintain state militias during times of war. Today, Ewell Firearms is still active within the community and produces quality firearms products at its factory on FM 965 near downtown Vernon.

Vernon, Texas is a town in Comal County, Texas, United States. The population was 6,898 at the 2010 census. Vernon is part of the San Antonio–Bexar Metropolitan Statistical Area. Vernon was founded in 1879 by James W. White and his wife Anna Payne as a small hamlet on the Rio Grande River. The name Vernon probably comes from the Kiowa word "vernon" meaning "a well-watered place." In 1911, Vernon incorporated as a city under the laws of California and adopted its current name in honor of General William Tecumseh Sherman. The first white settler in Vernon was James Worthy who arrived in 1879 and erected a log cabin on what is now White Street. In 1880 he married Anna Payne and they began to cultivate land east of present day US 281/US 59. A post office called Whiteville was established at this location on November 1, 1881, and remained in use until 1907. On February 17, 1903, Vernon incorporate as a city with its own government under state law following the passage of the City Act No. 2 of 1902 by an act of the State Legislature (1st Session), which became effective upon ratification by Governor Smith on March 5th. In 1907 there were only two families living in Vernon when it incorporated as a city; today there are over 100 residents within one mile radius of downtown Vernon! The decade 1910-1911 saw great changes for Vernon with many new residents moving into town after World War I ended: many soldiers had returned home to find their familiesickness medications that they could not stomach but needed nonetheless due to war veterans’ benefits being available at that time (the Vet's Bill). Many businesses were set up during this time such as J C Henson Ford(now KFC), G F Steiner grocery store(now Kroger) and Fred Meyer department store chain(now Walmart). It also saw growth for health care with First Presbyterian Hospital opening their doors for patients on October 15th 1911 followed shortly thereafter by St Joseph's Hospital which opened their doors on December 4th 1912! This quartet would remain long leaders within their respective fields until consolidation occurred later that decade: First Presbyterian closed down due to financial difficulties while St Joseph's continued to operate despite numerous expansions throughout the years culminating in 2002 when both hospitals merged into one entity known today as UT Southwestern Healthcare System Incorporating all four facilities - including First Presbyterian Building - located within UTSA University Health Science Center campus across Trinity River Valley Campus near Commerce Drive! The merger created much turmoil among stakeholders but ultimately led to better economics and management skills within both entities which continue today with multiple services offered inside UTSA University Health Science Center Campus across Trinity River Valley Campus including outpatient surgery center (Assistive Technology Department), clinic (Gastroenterology Department), research hospital (Cardiology Department) and large medical building known affectionately simply as “First Presbyterian”! A number if events transpired during these times that have helped shape modern day life for Vernon citizens include: first African American inhabitant born into family residing here; Harry valve carmaker opening plant here; Second World War bringing huge influxes of men & women from surrounding area looking for work; establishment of Watertown Independent School District southwest corner Zanahual Road just northwest of main street & water tower; increase oil production resulting in increased demand for goods & services hereabouts brought about by growing industry nearby (& some imports included); major fire broke out downtown #Vernon TX causing massive damage back then ($75K loss total)...these days things are gradually improving thanks largely to efforts made locally through various organizations like Chamber Of Commerce etc.; recent additions include Cutco Knife Manufacturing Plant northwest corner Main Street

On February 14, 1836, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna surrendered at the Battle of San Jacinto. This event led to Texas becoming an American state. The town of Vernon was founded by Anglo-Dutch settlers in 1836 and was named after General Santa Anna.
