The Wellses started out as farmers with their 12 acre plot of land. They grew corn, beans and cotton until World War II when they acquired an additional 30 acres that became known as “the farmhouse property.” The Wellses raised cows and chickens until 1949 when they decided to build a house on the property. It was during this time that Vernon made his most famous contribution to the community- building the first school in town. In 1957, Vernon donated 100 acres of his land near South Park Road for the construction of South Park Elementary School which now seats over 300 students from grades Pre K-5th grade. In addition to being a major factor inSouth Park’s success over the years, Vernon also served as President of its board of trustees from 1977-1981; he retired from that position in 2002 after 14 years service. In 2009 he was appointed Chairman emeritus by then Mayor Willie Cash following his death at age 95.

Vernon, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. Vernon was founded in 1881 by James A. Vernon and his wife Sarah. The Vernon Hotel was the first business in Vernon and still stands today. The population of Vernon peaked at around 2,000 in 1920, but has since declined to around 100 residents. Vernon is currently considered an agricultural community with a few manufacturing plants throughout the years. The first town meeting in Vernon occurred on January 21, 1881 when James A. Vernon met with twelve other settlers to discuss their new location. On December 10 of that year, the name of the new town was chosen by a vote from the surrounding landowners: Vernon would be called after General David Ewell's unit which had fought against Mexican forces at Palo Alto during the American Civil War (1865-1868). In 1882, James A. Vernon built a sawmill on Big Creek and began exports of lumber to Mexico City and other cities across North America. In 1884, he also started trading cattle for wool from ranching families in neighboring Austin County. By 1886,James A. Vernon had developed two cotton plantations - one near present day Milford Road and one about three miles southeast of downtown Vernon - These were both successful operations until 1893 when flood waters destroyed most of those plantations as well as damaging many homes and barns in what is now known as "the Great Cotton Flood". In 1895-96 Charles Withers established a blacksmith shop at 4200 Elm Street which became one of the most popular businesses in town due to its consistent quality services offered at reasonable rates; Withers created an iconic commercial sign that can still be seen outside of his shop today reading "Withers Blacksmith Shop". In 1897-98 two more plantations were lost to flooding; these included Fenton Plantation just east of downtown Vernon where approximately sixty slaves worked including some who may have been baptized into Christianity under John Crain's leadership; and Brown Plantation west of downtownvernon where over fifty slaves worked including some who may have been baptized into Christianity under Drayton Bogan's leadership before they were sold to Texan white men early 1900s . In 1898-99 another mill was started up by Jno Hensley northwest corner Main Street; this mill continued production until it closed down circa 1960 due to environmental problems associated with oil refineries nearby . In 1902-03 there was construction activity on IH 35 southbound near present day White Settlement; this project eventually led to increased traffic congestion throughout muchouthwest Texas because OFDOT wanted access to land adjacent thereto for expanding highway development . A post office opened up at Vernonia on November 12th, 1899 under the name Red River Station; but it closed down within six months due too low mail volume . In 1901-02 Llewellyn Bros., undertakers opened up their business within Limits Drug Store building northeast corner First Avenue & Second Street which became one of largest funeral home operators operating out there then or anyplace else during that time period . From 1904 thru 1907 several stores were open up along Main Street/Highway 3 between Hutchins & White Settlement while Mrs Lyon ran her grocery store next door (later renamed Luncheonette) until she moved away circa 1912 ; all these stores operated independently without any collusion or cooperation between them creating quite an uproar among local citizens who felt like they should get together and form their own cooperative venture instead vernONig
