The Vernon Volunteer Fire Department has been serving Vernon since 1907 and is one of the oldest volunteer fire departments in Texas. The first settlers to Vernon were seven men from Missouri who arrived on horseback on October 12, 1879. They were followed by three men from Illinois on October 15th and two men from Arkansas on October 17th. All nine individuals were employed as farmers and ranch hands in that initial settler colony. The town site was selected for its good access to water resources and its location midway between Wichita Falls, TX and Amarillo, TX which made it a convenient crossroads for goods moving between those cities and other parts of the country. Over time, other towns also grew up around Vernon due to its advantageous position at this intersection: Wichita Falls became a booming mining center during the early 20th century; Amarillo experienced rapid growth as a cattle drive stop during the late 19th century; and finally, Lubbock became established as a major city during World War II when military supplies reached Vernon through Lubbock Airport
