In the early 1900s, Vernon became known for its wide variety of fruits and vegetables due to its location on the Edwards Aquifer which supplies drinking water for much of Hudspeth County. The town's economy has changed little since then; it remains a working class community with a significant agricultural sector that employs many people within the local government and businesses. The name "Vernon" comes from two sources: one originates from General James Fenton (1811-1881), an American general during the Mexican-American War who fought at Palo Alto Battlefield near Los Angeles; and another originates from John Vernon (1795-1865), an Englishman who settled near present day Wichita Falls in 1836. General Fenton's father had been born in 1785 near Carthage, Tennessee, but moved to California with his family when he was five years old. He became involved with military life after being wounded while attending battle at Monterey Peninsula on October 20th 1846 whileserving as captain of Company E of San Francisco’s Sixth Regiment of Infantry under Brigadier General George Atherton.) After spending some time recuperating back home across Mexico City before returning to duty on November 6th 1850 as aide de camp to Colonel José Joaquín Moreno y Costilla on campaign against Texan rebels south of Presidio La GUADALAJA he returned westward along Santa Fe Trail whereupon arrived Atacama Desert December 10th 1850). On July 5th 1851 he married María Antonia Cisneros de la Peña y Valdez alias “Mamá del Rancho” (alias “Dona Caridad”) at Pueblo de las Cruces altar located about four miles due north of present day Pasadena using rites officiated by Father Miguel Angel Aguilarado De la Cueva.. They raised six children: Vicente Antonio Vernón (baptized March 9th 1852 – died young age 27 years), Ignacia Concepcion Vernón (born September 12th 1854 – died young age 3 years), María Mercedes Vera Vargas(born July 25th 1860 – died unmarried aged 26 years), Pedro Antonio Vernón (born November 3rd 1862 – died unmarried aged 4 months)and Agustín Oscar Victoriano Vernón(born February 7th 1865 – survived infancy). In 1909 Vernon voters passed an ordinance setting up fire control districts around their town limits; this ordinance remain in effect today and is responsible for keeping fires burning throughout most or all parts of Vernon except for portions close to rural areas covered by other fire districts which are managed by state or federal agencies such as Forestry Service or National Park Service
