When Vernon, Texas was founded in 1907, there were no ammunition stores or dealers. The first store was a general store and the first bullets were purchased from a local blacksmith. Ammunition for private pistols and revolvers was bought from local farmers and miners. The town’s only skyscraper, the Vernon Tower, began manufacturing ammunition in 1929. In 1932, ammunition became state law when it was ratified by the Texas Legislature. In 1957, Vernon opened its own plant to manufacture rifle rounds and handgun rounds. Ammunition production continued until 1971 when the plant closed due to low demand for products. Today, many of the original buildings in Vernon are still standing and are used as office space or businesses. A number of new buildings have been built on either side of Interstate 20 near where the old factory once stood. These include a high school (Vernon High School), two stores (Jenny’s Market & Hardware and Big Jim’s Sporting Goods), a post office (now known as Post Office Square), a library (Vernon Public Library) and an elementary school (Pioneer Elementary School).

In 1924, Vernons library opened with books from twenty-seven states. The Second World War led to an increase in military activity around Vernon; however, it did not result in any significant damage or loss of life.
