Grant arrived at Fort Worth with his army in October 1846, things changed quickly. He immediately began planning for an expedition to free Houston from Mexican captivity and quickly ordered Garland to start building a small fortification known as Fort Bowie on what is now State Highway 210 near present-day Uvalde Village. Garland may have been inspired byGeneral Santa Anna’s recent victory at Palo Alto which had ended Mexican resistance to American exploration in South Texas Heights (present day San Antonio). Santa Anna’s victory demonstrated that Mexico could not resist America’s ambitions to claim these lands as her own – something that would ultimately lead to war between America and Spain over these territories years later! As a result of this new development, Commodore John Doolittle led an exploratory mission through central Mexico City towards Baja California on November 12th1846 with orders from President Polk to explore any possible routes southwards across Mexico into United States territory (this mission would become known as Doolittle’s Raiders). On their arrival at Tlalpan de las Malvinas (near present-day Monterrey) they discovered Lake Texcoco which they christened “Lake Grant” after Commodore John Cushing’s successor Admiral James Kappagruber who had explored it earlier during Polk’s administration (Cushing had also served under Admiral Austin Lloyd during Polk’s first term). After exploring this body of water they returned home via Coahuila River where they anchored off Veracruz Island on February 6th1847!!! This event marked the beginning of American control over Baja California which would last until 1912! During their stay ashore Commodore Cushing & his men erected two stone masts high atop some rocks just east of present-day Dona Ana Countyline about midway between Punta Arenas & Socorro due east of Socorro Ferry Landing??? These Masts remain standing today aspartofthememorial parkoppositeFortBishoponMay 5th1969!!! While ashore at Veracruz Island Commodore Cushings men killed 2 Yuma Apaches called Curly Joe because he refused to give up his rifle while Yo-yoprotectedhispersonnel !!! What followed next is unknown but according to legend Curly Joe took revenge by slaying 1000 cattle!! Uvalde, Texas was founded on May 10, 1836 by Manuel Armijo and José Antonio Uva. The town was named after the Uvalde River in Mexico. The first post office in town was established on September 4, 1839. In 1847, the name of the town was changed to Uvalde City to reflect its growing importance. On December 12, 1861, the city became a county seat of Hudspeth County. On January 1, 1915, Hudspeth County was disbanded and replaced with Wise County as part of a larger geographical reorganization of Texas that also included San Antonio and Austin. The city's population reached 100,000 people by 1930.
