Uvalde is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 21,569 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Uvalde River and has been part of Midland County since 1876. The original town site was near the present-day intersection of FM 1093 and US 281. At the time of incorporation, Uvalde had a total population of 2,000 people. The first post office in Uvalde was established on July 22, 1876, by J.D. Hargrave and Fenton Clements. In 1916, Harry Wolkowsky opened Wolkowsky's restaurant in what is now downtown Uvalde and it served as the first business in town. He also started construction on what is now State Capitol Square which became home to many municipal buildings until it was destroyed by fire in 1969; however, it remains one of the oldest civic structures still standing in Midland County (the square still contains many historical relics from that era). In 1920s local ranchers began to get together to lease land for pasture for their herds of stock and began raising cotton ginning machines that enabled them to process more than 20 bales per day from their fields without having to leave their homes or go out into town to buy them fresh from the ginners' families - this made cotton farming an important sector of Midland County economy during those years. In 1932 cattle king John Deere set up his own operation hereabouts which continues today as Beemer’s Texaco service station across from City Hall; he built a largest single structure in Texas then – some 50 acres (20 hectares) long with three stories including a giant oil wellhead nearby! A later annexe called Rancho el Alto added 6 more ranches/ occupies today’s east side of I-10 just south of downtown Uvalde – making ranching one significant agricultural activity within 2 miles (3 kilometers) radius back then! Uvalde was founded in 1836 by Juan Antonio Uvalde and his wife, Blanca. The city was named for the Uvalde River which lay to the east of it. In 1848, during the Texas annexation into the United States, Uvalde became part of what is now San Antonio. The city's first post office opened in 1850. In 1853, a branch of the Santa Fe Railway reached Uvalde and helped spur growth in the city. In 1860, Mayor José A. Hidalgo designated downtown as the town center and began developing it into an important commercial district. By 1870, there were over 100 businesses in downtown Uvalde and it had become one of the most vibrant cities in Texas. In 1898, when San Antonio seceded from Mexico and became an American state, Uvalde benefited because its Mexican-born mayor at that time was Francisco Moreno Valencia. When San Antonio bid for permission to build a new airport (the first such request ever made by a Mexican municipality), Valencia abstained because he feared that such an airport would compete with Austin's newly established Alamo Airport which he saw as being too convenient for Mexicans living in Austin proper rather than being located within sight of their homes on Commerce Street near Travis Street. He instead recommended that San Antonio build its own airport outside its borders so as not to compete with Alamo Airport which he saw as providing better services: "It is very proper that our great Texan city should have her own airpoise; but I do not want her [San António] doing too much competition with our excellent Alamo Airport." In 1961, except for two years due to World War II military occupation (1944-1945), Downtown Dallas businesswomen organized themselves into what is now called "The Women's Business League" to pursue economic development opportunities through lobbying efforts on behalf of local businesses interests across Dallas County including those within Downtown Uvaldi itself despite initial resistance from some male businessleaders who felt they had been left out of these regional advances since women didn't traditionally hold executive or professional positions withinDallas County organizations like these back then
