Uvalde, Texas is a town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Uvalde were Mexicans who arrived in 1846. They started a store and trading post on the east side of town and named it "Old Fort Uvalde." A community developed on the west side of town around 1868 when two men from New Mexico bought land there and built a house called "Granite House." The name change came about because two brothers from Albuquerque bought some land nearby and renamed it "Uvalde" after their home state of New Mexico. The first post office in Uvalde was established in 1879. It was moved to its current location near downtown in 1902. Uvalde has grown rapidly since then with annexation by Austin during the 1950s and 1960s. Today, it has a population of over 2,000 people and is home to several large companies including UTSA (University of Texan Arboretum), TX Instruments Inc., Westwind Energy Services LLC, and others.
