By 1925 there were more than 100 petroleum companies operating in Texas; production increased when pipelines were built to carry oil fromfields across state lines. In 1924 local school board member Jerald Neely proposed naming a new high school after General José de Uvalde y Costilla because he had helped lead Mexican forces against Anglo settlers during their war for independence from Mexico. The name stuck and today's high school is also named Josefina Costilla Hidalgo High School after her father's namesake who fought against Mexico during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The economy changed again with World War II when many people moved into Texas to work in munitions factories or service camps due to rationing of food items necessary for war operations. Many residents returned home during the war but many others remained long after hostilities ended and some even took up residence in neighboring Amarillo until they left for good in 1958 due to changes brought about by energy development near Amarillo Airport - then called Midland International Airport - which led to an increase in traffic along US 191 making it difficult for small towns like Uvaldi to keep up with developments within their borders. Uvalde is a small town in Texas, located in Hudspeth County. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. Uvalde's name comes from Spanish meaning "wave" or "whirlpool." The first residents of what is now Uvalde were Texans who had come overland from Mexico during the Mexican–American War (1846-1847). They called their new settlement La Bahía de los Muertos (the Bay of the Dead), after one of their own dead soldiers who had been buried there. The first post office in Uvalde was established in 1849, and its name has been changed multiple times over the years - it was originally called Valdez until 1861, and later El Paso until 1907. In 1881, James Braidwood erected a toll road across Cedar Creek to connect his ranch with Austin. This road became known as Braidwood Road and still remains in use today. During World War II, while Texas was under military occupation by Japan, many Japanese Americans living near Austin decided to move to Uvalde to escape concentration camps set up near Houston. Some of these Japanese Americans founded an agricultural cooperative which they named Hideki Naka Farms Ltd., and developed some of the early irrigated land around Uvaldi into what is now known as North Park Hill Farmlands National Monument.
