Uvalde is a city in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 8,912 at the 2010 census. It is the namesake of Uvalde River. The city began as a small settlement called "New Uvalde," established in 1887 by settlers led by Gideon Pease and others who left Walker County to found Medina County. New Uvalde grew quickly, and by 1912 it had a population of 1,500. On July 2, 1916, the town incorporated with 2,000 residents and named it after General John J. Pershing's regiment which fought on the Mexican-American War border during that year's Battle of Poteet creek. In 1951 the City Council voted to change its name to Uvalde in honor of Lieutenant Colonel James Taggart who served as commanding officer of Company H (2d Battalion) 5th Cavalry Regiment during World War II; later that year he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism in that conflict. The new name stuck and has been used ever since by the City government and its citizens alike. The city has experienced several cycles of growth and decline throughout its history; between 1900 and 2000 it grew from an estimated population of about 775 to over 11,000; then between 2000 and 2010 it decreased again to 8,912 residents. However recent trends suggest that this downward trend may be continuing; according to preliminary 2011 census figures only 6% of town’s residents lived within one mile (1 km) of downtown or any other portion of their hometown – well below the national average rate for all cities with 10+, 20+, 30+ inhabitants (13%). However even if this rate were unchanged over the next few years there would still be less than one third (31%) living within one mile (1 km) either downtown or any other part of their hometown when measured against statewide averages for both age groups (+44%). In short while many negative trends exist they are not yet translating into wholesale decreases in overall population size or power as seen over recent decades past
The first settlers in Uvalde, Texas were farmers and their families who arrived in the early 1800s. By 1836, the town had a population of around 100 people. The town was named after General Sam Houston, who donated land to the community. The first school in Uvalde was built in 1839 and operated until 1861. In 1840, a post office was established in Uvalde and served until 1907. The first store opened in Uvalde in 1849 and grew into a reliable business district. From 1865 to 1870, the city hosted the annual fair which attracted many businesses and citizens from throughout the area. On July 15, 1886, Mayor Jenson Clements dedicated the new courthouse which stood on what is now downtown Uvalde. In 1898, Uvaldi became part ofufa County when it was created from portions of Hidalgo County.
