From Avila Morales many families moved into this area including those that founded Handbook Rock , Canyon Lake , Rancho Bernardo , Laguna Honda , Eagle Lake and others Numerous churches were built in these early days including Santiago Apostol Catholic Church which still stands today on Main Street across from Park Elementary School; First Baptist Church founded by George Waddell soon afterwards; Methodist EpiscopalChurch established about 1870 when Rev. James Hogg moved here for services; Second PresbyterianChurch organized about 1875 when Rev. John Dukes moved here Many businesses were started here such as Hogg’s Lumber Yard Subsidiary & Merchants Store; Biscoe hardware store Opened 1886 by Jno Peelebeck ; First National Bank building constructed 1915-1916 on main square now known as Walmart ; Gourdge Seed Co.; Post Office opened at current location hereinabout 1890 . By 1900 there were over 100 businesses operating in town along with schools, hospitals, churches and farms In 1907 Senator John Sherman Dulles gave $1 million towards development in what would become downtown Uvaldi through The Sherman-Dulles Foundation With that money various business establishments arose such as Consolidated Food Stores Inc., Texaco gas station/ convenience store/ Bakery/ Grocery store operated by Wanda Youngblood before it closed down in 2001 ; Hotel Plaza began operations circa 1957 opposite Rice University - demolished 2006 but foundations remain ); Asphalt plant began production 1936 becoming one of largest ever operated within Texas . The community has since seen some unwelcome changes such as displacement of numerous homes due to expanded shopping malls throughout Travis County while other aspects have seen healthy economic growth including hotel occupancy rates reaching 90 percent year-round according to recent data released by city officials
