Uvalde is a city in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 896 at the 2010 census. Uvalde became an independent municipality in 1906. It was named for General Edwin Vaulding and his wife Alice Earle Uvalde. The first permanent settler in what is now Uvalde was Captain John Henshaw who arrived on April 20, 1836 with his family from Kentucky. He established a trading post near the present day intersection of FM 925 and US 281. In 1840, Captain John's son James Henshaw organized a company to prospect for oil in Hudspeth County but this venture failed. In 1851 Aideen McDonald settled at what is now the southeast corner of FM 925 and US 281. She ranched until 1865 when she sold her land to Drury Colley for $2,000 cash. Aided by Colonel Edward Clements he began building a log cabin on what would become Mcdonald's Creek about six miles west of town on October 10th,1865- marking the beginning of Uvalde as an independent municipality under the jurisdiction of Hudspeth County. The first courthouse located in downtown Uvalde was built in 1870 by Judge Charles Silliman with help from Jeptha Hatch and others assisting him under the jurisdiction of Maverick Parish north of town . On November 6th, 1907 municipal election results showed that 98% of voters approved annexation into Hudspeth County; however no action was taken as it conflicted with elections held within Maverick Parish which continued to function as an autonomous government separate from Hudspeth County during that time frame

Uvalde served as the county seat from 1902 to 1907. The population of Uvalde decreased from its peak of over 1,500 residents in the early 1920s to less than 700 by 1970; however, it has since regained some of its pre-World War II population levels. The local water supply comes from the Uvalde Reservoir which lies adjacent to the town on a tributary of the Trinity River.
