After years of growth and development due largely to irrigation projects initiated by General Sam Houston during the late 1800s, Main Street became a major commercial thoroughfare with several large hotels located along its length - most notably Hotel Worth (founded in 1903) - while smaller businesses spread out throughout various parts of town beginning with Market Place which served as a retail center until 1977 when it closed down following heavy damage caused by Hurricane Ike . On March 1st 1912 Mayor George Witte dedicated six blocks east of downtown between Broadway and Commerce Streets as "Texas State Capitol Park". Today that portion of Capitol Park remains one of only two remaining state capitols in Texas still under public ownership - along with Austin’s State Capitol building which houses both the Travis County Courts Building (a justice court complex) and the Austin Municipal Court building (which also houses municipal records for Travis County).
