Uvalde, Texas is a small town located in the Uvalde County of Texas. The population was 2,824 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Nacogdoches, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1887 by brothers Andrew and John Braidwood. It was named for General Sam Houston because he had purchased land in what is now Uvalde County from Spanish settlers. In 1902, the name of the town changed to Uvalde after Major General Arthur Buchanan Ulysses S. Grant died at Fort Bliss, TX while on an American military expedition against Mexico City. The original Post Office building still stands and is used as a museum today. The townsite that makes up present-day Uvalde was platted in 1887 by Andrew and John Braidwood who were working with their father on a Rancho San Antonio grant near present-day Amarillo, Texas. They decided to name their new community after General Arthur Buchanan who they believed had given them land adjoining his rancho west of Nacogdoches River south of where Amarillo now stands. On July 10, 1902, when US Congressman James Gresham arrived in Nacogdoches to continue his investigation into Mexican Claims Settlement Act violations committed by Brigadier General Edward Hokeefeeler during the Mexican War (1846-1847), he called upon Albert Bowie (a rancher living nearpresent day Wichita Falls) to show him around the area and introduce him to some local landowners about potential sites for a post office within this newly formed county which included most of today’s Uvalde County excepting its eastern boundary which ran along Wichita Falls Creek adjacent to Jim Wells Mill Site National Historic Landmark). After sampling several potential post office names including “Aurora” (presumably due to nearby Aurora Borealis), “Uvalde” and even “Grantville” but rejecting all three names proposed by Bowie because they were already taken by other townsites in this area such as Wacoalba or Wanatah respectively; Gresham announced that he would choose “Uvalde” because it sounded like something related toGeneral Sam Houston who had been instrumental in helping purchase our county from Spanish settlers more than two hundred years earlier! With this initial choice as our official name we began Delivery Of Mail from our small single roomed wooden buildings on Main Street until finally surrounding ourselves with beautiful live oak trees which continues down Main Street unto present day! This beautiful tree lined street has become one of my favorite places on Earth simply for its beauty! Today there are approximately 300 residents living inside Uvaaldetimes range from farmers & ranchers practicing horticulture (& raising cattle & pigs), law enforcement officials providing security for municipal events/parades/ functions & government contractors performing various services ranging from engineering consulting services through construction projects including public works projects throughout each season! From flowers grown on rooftop gardens during summertime all the way up through Christmas Tree lighting process; people here take pride in putting together one heckofan Village atmosphere every day!!
