The early history of Uvalde can be traced to 1829 when John (Jimmie) Poe founded a farmstead here. In 1853, J.D. Hornbeck established a post office and store in what is now downtown Uvalde and started trading with Mexicans who had come through Hudspeth County for goods and services during their journey southward from Mexico City to Central America. In 1881, Wm Henson built a two-story stone courthouse on Main Street in downtown Uvalde which served as the county seat until 1911 when it was moved to nearby Beaumont. A new courthouse was completed in 1912 and served as the district court building until 1977 when it was replaced by the current structure on High Street in downtown Uvaldi which also houses the social services department of the sheriff's office. 2

Uvalde is a city in Fort Worth, Texas, United States. The population was 2,468 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. It has been a center of commerce and industry since the early days of the Republic of Texas. Uvalde's first post office opened in 1836. The town grew rapidly because of its location on the banks of Buffalo Bayou, which became an important natural resource for cattle and other goods brought down by wagon trains overland from Mexico and Central America. After annexation by Texas in 1845, Uvalde became an important railroad town with its own stations on several major lines. In 1865, when Houston formed Republic of Texas government under Lubbockite leadership, Uvalde also joined forces to resist annexation into that new government; however, after Harper's Ferry Raid failed to put an end to the war between Texan rebels and Union soldiers (the raid was conducted by Confederate General Sam Houston), most Texans chose to remain loyal to their old Lone Star State government rather than join forces with Houston. In 1875, as part of efforts to attract settlers near Fort Worth during what would become one of history's great population growth rates,[1] Uvaldi held a fair which attracted more than 3,000 people.[2] In 1890s local farmers began growing cotton plantations; this began displacing earlier pioneer agriculture in the area. Cotton production greatly increased during World War II due to developments such as improved irrigation systems and synthetic fertilizers but also because newly arrived soldiers were drafted into military service instead of becoming self-employed farmers like previous generations had done. The plantations were eventually dismantled following World War II and replaced by suburban development adjacent to Interstate 10 Exit 227A/Uvadene Industrial Boulevard (now IH-10). This change in demographics led some residents—particularly those who lived near industrial plants or airports—to move out of town or commute long distances for work outside the city limits; however others have continued living within city boundaries despite concerns about air quality or lack thereof due to increased traffic congestion on IH-10 outside urban boundaries
