Uvalde, Texas is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,649 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hidalgo County. Uvalde was founded in 1836 by Captain John C. Cooke and was named for him. The first post office in Uvalde was established in 1837, and the town had a population of about 25 when it incorporation took place on November 5 of that year. The original plat for Uvalde called it "Eagle Butte", but because of its location some people changed the name to "Uvalde". The townsite lies on the eastern edge of what is now Hidalgo County and straddles both banks of the Rio Grande River; as such, it has been subject to several floods since its inception. In 1892 US Cavalry Lieutenant Edwin Pugh located a well core within Indian Territory (later Kansas) which he claimed as part of his Rancho Atascosa sale. This began cattle drives into Mexico which led to increased demand for watermelon from settlers living near Wichita Falls; this also caused an increase in production at Lubbock's Southwestern Railroad where fields were watered by means of ditches dug across the river then crossed over to irrigate crops using gravity alone until 1889 when an artificial canal was built to accomplish this goal; one reason why oil became so important here during this time period may have been due to natural resources readily accessible here being less expensive than elsewhere: oil wells could be drilled much deeper than nearby surface formations making transportation and storage easier while also providing more predictable returns on investment). Uvalde, Texas was founded in 1836 by James Bowie and his wife Nancie. The town was named after General Zachary Taylor's Uvalde County, Texas Rancho Grande. It became a small agricultural community with a population of around 100 people in the early 1800s. In 1881, the town had grown to over 3,000 residents when it was annexed by Austin. Uvalde experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century as a result of its location on the Mexican-American border and its status as an important commercial center for cattle and cotton farming. In 1916, oil began flowing from Anadarko Field in east Texas and production increased in Uvalde due to its proximity to the new wells. The city developed rapidly during World War II as a result of military spending and industrial hemp production; however, economic decline followed shortly afterward. The current downtown area was built between 1915 and 1920 as part of a major housing development called " Cedar Park". Prior to that time, most development took place along Loop 410 which ran through town center. Today, much of what is now downtown was built during or after World War II; consequently, many historical buildings remain largely unscathed although some have been renovated or replaced. The largest shopping complex in town is located at Elmendorf Plaza just south of Loop 410; other significant businesses include Hooters restaurants (owned by PNC) and Sears Roebuck & Co.'s flagship store on South Lamar Street near Interstate 35E (the old name for I-35). In addition to retailing resources such as clothing storesupplies (including Sam's Club), cafes/diner chains (PepsiCo fountain restaurant being one notable example), medical supplies (/Dentist Underwood pharmacy), beauty supply stores (/Shoppers Drug Mart), etc., Uvalde has also become known for its cheese industry - particularly Parmesan cheese produced by Green Valley Cheese Factory on Commerce Street outside the city limits - which has led to it becoming one of the mostimportant markets for this type of cheese worldwide. In recent years there has been heavy redevelopment taking place around Elmendorf Plaza including construction of luxury condos; however despite this continued growth potential there are still few large surface parking lots available within walking distance from several Downtown business districts - thus limiting access especially to high-end shoppers who would like easy access to all they need without having to leave their apartments or shops
The Uvalde community was founded in 1857 by men from the Mexican state of Coahuila. The town grew quickly, and in 1874 it became a county seat. In 1902, the Texas Legislature moved the County Seat to Uvalde from Alpine because of population growth there.
