University Park, Texas was the first town in Brazoria County and the first in the area now known as University Park. The original settlers were Presbyterian missionaries who arrived in 1836. The town was named for Dr. George Washington Houston, a professor of medicine at Sam Houston State University. In 1846, Brazoria County was organized andHouston became its first county judge. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the border of two counties and its access to wagon roads leading into nearby Austin and San Antonio. By 1860, University Park had a population of around 2,000 people. In 1861, Union General Robert Ewell decided to attack Houston’s city Limits fortifications near Riceville with the hope of driving out Confederate forces from the area. However, when he unexpectedly reached University Park instead of going farther east towards Houston he realized that his forces were too dispersed and withdrew without engaging Houston’s forces. In 1865, Baylor College opened up shop in what is now University Park with some 12 students on staff. After Baylor left in 1868, Trinity Bible College followed suit in 1870-71 but it closed down within a few years because of lack of funding In 1876-77 local farmers began growing corn on their land which yielded good crops but they were not able to sell them so they sold their land back to the farmers On July 4th 1880 an extra 1/2 acre (0 hectare)of adjacent property was donated by Major Arthur Pemberton giving rise to what is now Holcombe Road
