The University Park campus was founded in 1881 by the Texas Legislature as The University of Texas at Austin. It was dedicated on Oct. 17, 1881, with classes starting on Nov. 1, 1881. In 1907, the legislature appropriated $10 million to build a new university campus east of town on what is now East Campus Drive. Construction began in 1909 and finished in 1912. In 1915, the legislature designated UT Austin's medical school as one of the "University Schools." In 1916, UTAustin became a co-educational institution and adopted a name change to The University of Texas at Austin (UTA). On Feb. 14, 1927, President Calvin Coolidge signed legislation designating UT Austin's engineering school as one of "the Five Colleges of Texas." That same year also saw the opening of Chancellor James A. McPherson's first research laboratory in Richardson Hall along First Avenue South between Lamar Boulevard and Interstate 35E. On July 8, 1942, during World War II when Nazi Germany occupied Europe and annexed Austria into Germany as part of their occupation policy; UTAustin entered into an agreement with Columbia College for joint enrollment in military training programs for army officers and enlisted men from both countries under US Army Forces Special Operations Command (USAFSOC). This cooperation continued until 1945 when Columbia College withdrew from this arrangement due to wartime restrictions placed upon them by Washington D.C.. After World War II ended however; UCAs engineering program remained affiliated with Columbia while its medical program separated from UCATT via an agreement reached in 1948 which allowed medical students to complete their undergraduate degrees simultaneously at UCATT and UCAustin. On May 20th 1961 Governor John Connally signed Senate Bill 439 which created Baylor University System including both UT Austin campuses including those located east of town on Hearst Tower Road/First Ave South called Baylor City Limits campuses . This addition brought undergraduate student body size up to 24 institutions making it possible for all students attending any one institution to receive graduate level education without having to leave that institution or transfer to another institution
