In 1915, University Park was founded as a small agricultural community in the rural area of West Texas. With only a few cents per acre of land, University Park relied on its students and faculty to provide essential goods and services such as transportation, food, and clothing. The town's only source of electricity came from an engine used for farming purposes. In 1935, Texas A&M University (TAMU) was established in what would become the largest university in Texas. TAMU needed more space so it purchased 104 acres adjacent to the Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) at University Park. In 1941, TAMU opened its first building on campus- the Administration Building. One year later, TAMU hired Professor Rufus Ewell as its first dean of graduate studies. In 1957, TAMU acquired another 106 acres adjoining AES and erected a new $35 million engineering school whichtoday is known as the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS). This addition helped increase TAMU's enrollment by 50%, making it one of the most populous universities in TX with over 20,000 students today! In 1969-1970 TSU bought out TAMU’s interest in SEAS for $14 million dollars creating what is now known as Southern Methodist University (SMU). In 1980-1981 SMUs purchase from Baylor College of Medicine their research library which today houses over 100 million items including books, periodicals and electronic media! Finally in 1987 Southern Methodist installed an outdoor LED light system that became world famous when it was turned on during halftime of the NCAA basketball championships at SMUs home court “The allocate”!
