University Park is a city in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 20,827 at the 2000 census. It was originally named Arlington after General George Washington. In 1909, University Park was added to the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area and became part of the new Dallas–Fort Worth Regional Airport. In 1978, University Park merged with Irving and became a community within the new Irving Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city of Arlington proper is located in Tarrant County on the right bank of the Trinity River east of downtown Dallas and west of Fort Worth. The population of Arlington proper was 93,912 as of 2010 according to the U.[1] University Park began as a small farming village called Arlington Heights on November 14, 1881 when private landowner Colonel James Henson donated 154 acres (65 ha) to establish what would become University Park[2]. On October 6, 1888, UA president John Denton presented Denton's gift to Mayor John Ralston Purcell for dedicated use as a park[3]. At that time it consisted only of 640 acres (248 ha). A year later on December 5th 1889University Park officially became an incorporated town due to passage by local authorities[4], when then Mayor Purcell annexed University Village into Ironton Township[5]. On July 1st 1907 however incorporation wasn't allowed through annexation so University Park reverted back to its original name: Arlington [6][7][8][9][10] It wasn't until 1915 that North Texas Normal School opened its doors in what would become present day UA campus which sparked growth for both academic institutions[11] and residential areas around them[12][13][14]. One year later on October 12th 1916 North Texas Normal School reopened as Lone Star College under charter from The State Board Of Education with affiliation with Southwestern Baptist Seminary [15][16] . OU also re-opened in this same year following two years closure due to World War I veteran shortages caused by US entry into war[17]: 1919 Northern State Teachers College; 1920 Southern Methodist Agricultural College; 1921 Austin Peay Normal School; 1922 Lamar Institute Of Technology; 1923 Midland Electric Cooperative Company Incorporation vied for authority over electric light company within town limits ; 1924 First National Bank & Trust Company established in newly annexed Midland Electric Cooperative Company Incorporation vied for authority over oil well near town limits ; 1925 Baylor Waco Medical Center opened followed by Baylor Women's Hospital in 1929 . UTEP also opened their doors at this time although they are not considered part of or associated with either university today:[18] 1930s: 1940s-1960s: 1970s-1980s : 1990s - Present Day In 1931 UTEP reopened as Southern Methodist University after being closed for many yearsdue largely to budgetary restrictions put forth by Governor Connally.[19]: p.191 This marks one significant milestone along American universities' long histories intertwined with military service academies
