According to the 2010 census,[2] the city has a total area of 21 square miles (58 km2), including 17 square miles (46 km2) of land that is water eligible for annexation by Dallas or DFW.[3][4] As a result of its location on I-35W between Richardson Road and Flower Mound Road, University Park experiences high speeds from north to south during peak traffic hours due to its position near both exits points for I-635/I-35W which form one major corridor through Collin County connecting downtown Dallas with Plano to the northwest and Forth Worth to the southeast. The history of University Park began with Sam Houston State University which was founded in 1876 as a small town on campus known as Oak Cliff Village before being renamed Sam Houston State College in 1936 when it became clear that there would be more than one college within Briscoeville Township collective name given that two colleges - Lamar Institute & Southern Methodist - were established adjacent to each other around this time frame[5][6].
