The University Park Gun Range is a rifle and pistol range located in University Park, Texas. The range opened its doors to the public in 1932 and has been providing shooting enthusiasts with a safe place to shoot since then. During World War II, the University Park Gun Range was used by the United States Army as an artillery range. After the war, it became home to the Texas Rifle Association (TRA) and was used for muzzleloader target practice until 1984 when it transitioned to rifles. Today, the TRA manages the range on behalf of UT Athletics and uses it for indoor and outdoor shooting programs. In 1932, John Pritzker donated land at 6th Street and I-10 West in University Park for use as a gun range. At that time, only shotguns were allowed on site; however, rifle shooters were soon able to join in on the fun! In 1946, rifle ranges were renovated and added handguns; this change allowed students from nearby universities to participate in NRA sanctioned matches at UTPV while still being able to use their firearms at ourrange. It wasn’t until 1958 that we moved into our current building which now houses both our pistol training program as well as our Rifle Training Program! We continue grow today with new renovations that include: addition of an industry-leading 3-meter clay target tube & 12x50mm scope; expansion of our 30-meter prone field; installation of state-of-the-art Kidde Shooting Systems reloading carts complete with milspec magazines/pistols - perfect for practicing scenario presentation skills!

These weapons were designed toshoot at small animals such as rabbits or squirrels instead of humans. They proved successful and saw continued use into the 19th century, with more than 100 different models produced over time (see photo below). The Next Step: As shooting skills improved, so too did the demand for new targets – hence the development of paper targets starting in the early 1800s (see photo above). Paper targets quickly became more durable than wood counterparts, which allowed them to become mainstay projectiles for outdoor fun competitions throughout America (see photo below). University Park was founded in 1881 by Dr. Jameson Rice and Dr. John H. White as the Agricultural Experiment Station, a research center for agriculture and horticulture that would grow to become one of the most comprehensive agricultural experiment stations in the United States. The original campus consisted of only two houses, but it soon grew into a sprawling complex with over 100 buildings and more than 4,000 employees. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson established the University Park Foundation to support research at University Park and other universities across America. The Foundation continues to support university research today through its grants program and its endowed chairs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The University Park campus is home to many famous academic institutions including Texas A&M University-Commerce (TAMU-Commerce), Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMU-Kingsville), Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (SWBTS), Dallas Morning News editorial board, American Petroleum Institute (API) headquarters, Houston Chronicle editorial board building and much more! Today, University Park remains one of the largest metropolitan areas in Texas with an estimated population of over 1 million people.
