University Park, located in the Houston metropolitan area, was founded by Dr. James H. Walker on November 10, 1881. The town was named after Dr. James H. Walker’s Creek which flowed through the area and provided a place to play while students were attending Houston Baptist University (HBU). The first building in University Park was the Academy of Mines and Metallurgy which served as the school’s primary instruction center until 1892 when it moved to its present location at Main Street and Memorial Drive. In 1907, Houston businessman A.F. Goodrich donated land for a new university campus with an initial enrollment of 1,500 students and it became known as Goodrich Campus. In 1916, Houston Mayor George Kessler donated another tract of land for a new university campus that would become known as University Park Center and serve as the main student body center until 1960 when it moved to its current location on Montrose Boulevard near Interstate 45 Southwestern Freeway East. The opening of Rice University in 1935 signaled the beginning of a period of growth for University Park that would continue until eventually reaching its peak during World War II when over 60 colleges and universities came to campus including Texas State College (TSC), Southern Methodist University (SMU), Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), Rice Institute of Technology (RICE) and UT Austin School of Business (UTAB). These institutions helped form what is now known as “The Lone Star State” due to their significant presence in this region during World War II. As Texans began to move away fromHouston in search of opportunity elsewhere, so too did many members of their Universities who followed suit before finally closing down or moving out altogether over time- Brownie McGuire Teachers College closed down in 1951; Lamar Community College disbanded in 1957; Samford Univ., Alabama closed down in 1961; Rice Univ., Texas closed down 1963; UT Austin School Of Business dissolved 1966- all but one school had closure by 1970%. However thanks to donations from individuals, foundations and state legislatures University Park survived into the 21st century continuing its impressive growth trajectory such that today there are more than 450 institutions operating within this city limits making it oneofthe top metros for higher education achievements across North America!
