University Park is a city in Hays County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hays County. University Park is part of the Wichita Falls metropolitan area. The city was founded on October 3, 1881 by Samuel Phelps and James Minton as an agricultural town named for George Washington University in Foggy Bottom, London. On November 15, 1881, it became the second city in Hays County and was named after William Austin Baylor (1820-1892), a prominent landowner and banker who had donated land to the town. Baylor had moved from eastern Kansas to Wichita Falls in 1859 and soon started acquiring large tracts of land hereabouts which he sold to various buyers. In 1886 Baylor donated $10,000 to help found Wichita State University; this gift has been used numerous times since then to support various campus activities including football games played at WSU stadium and basketball games played at nearby John A. McCloy High School (now Olney High School). In 1907 Baylor's grandson developed what would become known as "Baylor Place" - now home to Baylor University's main library - on a tract of land he had acquired east of town near US 287/US 283. The first academic building on site - now known as Main Campus - was built in 1911 with funding from Coke & Pepsi co-founder J P Morgan Sr.. University Park, Texas was founded in 1876 as the Agricultural and Mechanical Institute by a group of statesmen and educators. The name "University Park" is derived from the first two words in its founders' names- Agricultural Society of Texas and Mechanical Institute. The institute grew rapidly due to donations from wealthy individuals in the state, as well as government funding. In 1894, University Park became an institution of higher education with the passage of the Higher Education Act. The university has since grown to include a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. The University Park campus encompasses over 238 acres (112 hectares) within the city limits of Austin metropolitan area. It is home to more than 60 buildings, including 11 Academic Buildings, 14 Research Centers, and three Library Buildings. Undergraduate students are lodged in 28 student housing units while graduate students are housed in six buildings on campus. A large sculpture garden surrounds the main academic building on Campus Drive which serves as a green space for student activities and includes a lake, tennis courts, lawns, ponds, trees and gardens. On November 3, 1935, University park incorporated as a city under state law No: 30-187 which provided for municipal incorporation when "the population of Bowie County shows itself to be equal to that of any other county within this State." In 1960 United States Representative Lloyd Bentsen (D-Houston) was sworn into office at ceremonies located at Dormitories on Western Avenue in front of what is now UTSA’s Hendricks Tower campus.
